What are DOT physicals?

The Department of Transportation (DOT) requires that individuals who apply for a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) license must pass a comprehensive physical exam. Anyone with a CMV license must complete an exam to renew it.

The goal of DOT physicals is to confirm that a driver is physically, emotionally, and mentally capable of safely operating a commercial vehicle. This assessment ensures the driver’s safety and the safety of the public.

NewMed Immediate Care offers DOT physicals that meet the requirements of the Illinois Department of Transportation and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).

The medical team is extensively trained and certified to perform DOT physicals.

When should I schedule a DOT physical?

Schedule a DOT physical at NewMed Immediate Care if you’re applying for a commercial license for the first time.

DOT physicals are also required every two years for commercial drivers to maintain their licenses. In some cases, more frequent physicals may be needed for drivers with certain medical conditions, including high blood pressure (hypertension) and diabetes.

Once you successfully complete your exam, your provider submits a medical examination report to the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners (NRCME). A copy is also available for you.

What happens during a DOT physical?

During your DOT physical, the NewMed Immediate Care team reviews your medical history and existing health. Your provider checks your vital signs and completes a manual exam of your body, including your eyes, mouth, spine, and limbs.

They also evaluate your:

  • Lungs
  • Heart
  • Reflexes
  • Nervous system

A physical exam also includes a urine test, and the team may order blood work if you have or are at risk of diabetes or another chronic disease. On-site testing is available.

If you meet the requirements of the DOT physical, you’ll be issued a medical card. If you don’t pass the physical, you can schedule another appointment. If you fail the exam three times, you aren’t eligible to retest until 30 days pass.

The team can also recommend any treatments you need to address acute or chronic health issues that prevent you from passing the exam.
