Work Physical

What is a work physical?

A work physical is an exam your employer requires to evaluate your ability to safely perform your job duties. In addition to assessing your overall health, a work physical finds any health concerns that would put you or others at risk for injuries.

Many employers require a work physical to comply with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations.

Work physicals are usually a pre-employment assessment to be sure you’re fit for the job. However, your employer may require regular work physicals throughout your employment. You may also need a DOT (Department of Transportation) physical to obtain or renew a commercial driver’s license.

What should I expect during a work physical?

Work physicals are similar to annual checkups but with an additional focus on the aspects of your health that are essential for your job.

During a work physical, your NewMed Immediate Care provider will:

  • Review your personal and family medical history
  • Learn about medications you may take
  • Check vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, and temperature)
  • Complete a general physical exam (checking heart, lungs, abdomen, eyes, ears, nose, throat, and skin)
  • Complete a neurological exam
  • Run blood and urine tests
  • Assess fitness and function (strength, flexibility, endurance, and mobility)
  • Verify immunizations and vaccinations (and give you shots if you’re not up-to-date)
  • Perform substance abuse screening
  • Do other job-specific evaluations (lung capacity, functional movement assessment, ergonomic assessments, and others)

For more physically demanding jobs, your exam might include vision, hearing, and cardiovascular tests or checking for movement and balance disorders.

What happens after a work physical?

After completing your work physical, your NewMed Immediate Care provider discusses your exam results. They may not have a complete analysis if lab tests are pending, but with their on-site lab, you can be sure your results won’t take long.

If your provider discovers any health concerns, they recommend the steps you can take or treatments you may need to overcome the issue and prepare for another work physical. If you pass the exam, they complete a medical clearance certificate for your employer.
